LightWire’s Client Excel Academy Charter School is a high performing, tuition-free, public middle school serving more than 200 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from East Boston and Chelsea. Roughly 72% of students are Latino and low-income, 55% speak a language other than English in the home, and all are admitted via a lottery. Excel’s highly rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum supported by a structured school culture is the key to the school’s success.LightWire began working with Excel in the Fall of 2010, replacing an existing outsourced IT firm. As frequently happens, Excel’s search for a new firm had been fomenting in the background, but a near catastrophic series of events with their Exchange 2007 server forced action, resulting in the selection of LightWire to become their IT Managed Services Partner.

LightWire quickly resolved the issue with the Exchange 2007 server and has since been making improvements to the organization’s infrastructure – these improvements include:

  • Implementation of a SAN for redundant storage
  • Migration of all data and Exchange services to a new server
  • Implementation of LightWire’s monitoring platform
  • Creation of standardized images for staff and student laptops
  • Implementation of an improved Wireless platform
  • Implementation of centralized anti-virus protection
  • Implementation of centralized auditing for the company equipment.

Over the last three years, LightWire has assisted Excel in opening 2 new school campuses, most recently building the infrastructure for Excel’s new High School campus in Chelsea and East Boston. LightWire has designed and implemented all of the technology in these schools and worked hand-in-hand with the school to make sound economic decisions with their constrained resources. As a result, Excel has a smoothly running technology platform with direct integration across all three campuses to share information and collaborate with each other. We have also introduced new services, including managed wireless systems, Chromebooks, Microsoft Hyper-V technology for virtual servers, and Remote Desktop Services for mobile staff.
